Fish Farm Cost Reduction Projects – Fish FeedSeptember 2023 Fish Farms in several geographies are now invited to take part in a cost reduction project that targets feed efficiency. Cost structure statistics – before and after – by type of fish shall be shared with participating farms. Fish feed can make about 50% of a hatchery’s cost structure. That makes it a decent focal point for cost efficiency efforts. Statistics is tricky, however, as fish farms differ in the types of fish they grow, farm size, target weight of the fish, speed of growth, target nutritional values of the fish, regional climate, and more. The type of fish and desired speed of growth, for example, should dictate the percent of protein and fat in the feed. The combination of these two highly impacts the cost of feed per ton: The higher the protein, the higher the cost per ton. Any additional 1% of fat, compared to the optimal level, will result in about a 2% increase in the cost per ton, and therefore, an increase of about 1% in a farm’s total costs. In addition, similar farms in different regions may face different access to feed products, and different positions of negotiation. A cost optimization project may provide a good opportunity for revisiting additional options for feed sourcing, and costs.
